Stockpile volumes: walking the pile vs. flying it

Eyeballing, a surveyor with a GPS rover, or a drone — three ways to measure a stockpile, what each costs, and why the numbers differ.

A stockpile is money sitting outdoors, and how it gets measured decides whether the books match the yard. Propeller Aero's comparison of the common methods lines up with what we hear from aggregate producers and earthwork contractors alike, so it's worth walking through the three options honestly.

Eyeballing it

Someone experienced looks at the pile and calls a number. It's free and instant, and Propeller puts the typical error at 10–20% — on a 20,000-ton pile that's a 2,000–4,000-ton guess. There is nothing to show an auditor, and no way to know which direction you were wrong.

Walking it with a rover

The traditional method: a licensed surveyor climbs the pile with a GPS rover (or works it from a total station), collecting points across the surface and around the toe, then builds a surface and computes the volume. The accuracy is genuine. The problems are everything else. Propeller notes it takes one to two days on site, so the cost pushes most operations to quarterly or annual surveys; it puts a person on loose, unstable material; and the handful of points a person can physically collect means the pile's shape is approximated between them. The number is also stale almost as soon as it's delivered.

Flying it

A drone survey flies a grid over the yard — under an hour for a typical site, per Propeller — and photogrammetry turns the imagery into a surface model with thousands of points on every pile, toe to crest. Volumes are computed against a base surface and reported with the ortho, so each number is attached to a dated picture of the pile it came from. Propeller reports accuracy of 97–99% against professional survey, with results back within 24 hours and nobody setting foot on the material. Their Cemex example at Rüdersdorf, Germany, shows the shape of the change: capture time fell from roughly four hours to about one, with results the next day and precision sufficient for formal audit.

Why the drone number is usually the better one

  • Point density. Thousands of measured points per pile versus dozens means irregular shapes, undercuts, and multiple peaks are captured rather than interpolated.
  • Toe definition. The ortho makes the pile boundary visible and repeatable instead of a judgement call made while standing on it.
  • Repeatability. Same flight plan, same base surface, same method every time, so month-to-month differences are real changes, not method changes.
  • A record. Every volume comes with a timestamped, georeferenced image. Disputes with suppliers or between crews get shorter.
